The Jigokudani Monkey Park (地獄谷野猿公苑, Jigokudani Yaen Kōen) in Yamanouchi, Nagano Prefecture offers visitors the unique experience of seeing wild monkeys in their natural habitat and bathing in hot springs.
The park has one man-made pool around which the monkeys gather, located about 15 minutes' walk from the park entrance. The Japanese Macaques (aka Snow Monkeys) live in large social groups and it can be quite entertaining to watch their interactions. The monkeys are accustomed to humans, which means the monkeys often will ignore the guests even when they're observing from a close distance. The best time to see the monkeys is in the winter up until the end of March.
