Welcome everyone, @inzanekicks here to introduce the @OGsupportgroup week long appreciation for 1990s sneaker culture. In due time we will pay homage to all of the significant decades that sneakers played a role but for now we will start with the greatest decade in sneakers so far.For some this most certainly will be open to debate and that is perfectly fine. However let me clarify, the 90s were not chosen due to biased nostalgia regarding certain sneakers,a particular sport,a refusal to look beyond an era or anything of the sort. The reasoning is far more universal. The 90s represented a peak in sneaker culture where the most diverse number of brands held an influential role.
Basketball was the prime example where a number of legitimate stars represented various brands with their own unique signature models. This included brands such as Nike,Adidas,Reebok,Fila and Converse just to name a few.In today's NBA there are literally 3 main brands with the rest holding minor influence. The mentality of the time was different where diverse tastes were encouraged which motivated brands to be creative and expand.
With such a perspective for creativity and brand appeal this went beyond the basketball courts and into other sports.Football, soccer and baseball would be represented as well with running and tennis having the most memorable designs of the decade.
Beyond athletics the entertainment and pop culture of the 90s would also have its distinct imprint on sneaker fashion.Just like in the sports realm where such a wide variety of brands either played a significant or minute role the same can be said with the music and tv shows that defined an era.The diversity was present no matter how significant or lasting it turned out to be in the end. With Jordan Brand in particular beginning to distinguish themselves in the entertainment world.
Throughout the following week the #ogsupportgroup members will be posting a wide array of 90s sneakers spanning a wide dichotomy of themes, subjects and subcultures. We all hope you enjoy the posts and feel free to comment your favourite things from the 90s.Take care.
