One of the main reasons I was first drawn to birds and ornithology is because their is so much diversity in species, habitats, behavior, etc that I am constantly learning new things and generating questions and wondering.
I think the same has happened with insects!!! My god I am in awe... This snake fly landed on my hand while cooking breakfast and I can't guarantee a year ago I would have taking the time to observe. Maybe mistook it for a wasp or something. Instead I thought, "Holy hell! A mini dragon!" Curiosity led me to photograph and research... This #BadassBeneficials is both territorial and carnivorous preying mainly on aphids and mites!
Permaculture is difficult to explain sometimes but one main aspect I believe is to understand the landscape and it's habits... Yes, but this also includes knowing the WHOLE community! Insects, grasses, whatever.
If you take the time to see what flies by I can guarantee you won't ever be bored.
That's all for right now :) Thanks. #SnakeFly #BadassBeneficials

You can tell it's a female by the long ovipositor. #snakefly #raphidioptera

I found this female snakefly this Summer in a small tree. There were probably 15 or 20 individuals in this one tree.

They were drawn to this one spot -probably by female pheromones.

In his book Insect Sex Pheromones, Martin Jacobson, talks about how both male and female snakeflies placed together would get excited and run around swinging or vibrating their abdomens. Which sounds very sweet and fun until you read in The Evolution of Mating Systems in Insects and Arachnids edited by edited by Jae C. Choe and Bernard J. Crespi, that females have been known to behead males who are sexually pursuing them.

If I ever get the opportunity to come across a snakefly gathering like this again, I hope to be able to catch some video of interactions between the males and females. Could get interesting.

This Snakefly is eating pollen from the flower. Flowers are central hub for feeding many insects besides bees.

This #snakefly eats #aphids and wags her #ovipositor as she eats... maybe as an expression of her #delight in the #food. They're called snake flies because of their elongated #thorax ... It looks like a snake rearing its head ready to strike. They have the only #larvae that can move in reverse, and the adults are very #rare!
