Facebook timeline has reminded me it’s 4 whole years today since my book, ‘Style Me Vintage: Weddings’ was officially published and became available to purchase, as it still is, from all good book shops and Amazon. It seems such a long time ago now (I was first approached by the publishers in the back end of 2011, which is like, genuinely a blogging career lifetime ago!). I have to be honest, it was a bloody tough experience. I struggled to get the book complete in ways I am not sure I would now - different mindset, different life/work environment, an older/wiser head - and my publisher wasn’t brilliant at supporting me once the book was out there. In fact, I don’t feel bad about saying, I actually had pretty much zero support in promoting the book once it had been published, bar some representation at my book launch (which was epic, by the way - you can see it on my blog here http://lvmyd.rs/smvweddings). It’s safe to say I’d approach a project like this now very differently.
Still, I am immensely proud of this little book. Producing it taught me a few important lessons. Like, for example, what’s involved in getting published (I had no idea at all), and what I’m capable of under pressure. I also made many new friends through the book and frequently use the book itself as a reference tool. I love the memories I have of working for 3 incredibly long, challenging days in East London on the photoshoot (we really needed a week, if not longer - how we packed a full book contents worth of shooting in 3 days, I’m still not sure!). Above all, the one thing I’m most proud of is that my Grandpa got to see me publish this book before he passed away in December 2014. My Grandpa was immensely proud of me - he’d personally take copies of my book down to Lichfield Library, where he lived, and give copies to all his friends too. His pride filled me with joy and happiness and a genuine sense of accomplishment. If you happen to have a copy of my book, there’s a picture of my Grandpa on his wedding day in 1942 at the bottom of page 69 #littlestoriesofmylife 📚
