Faces of the World : Arcos de Valdevez, PORTUGAL – Arcos de Valdevez is a very quiet town when there are no tourists around. Life moves on slowly and peacefully here, amidst its beautiful tranquil setting of a beautiful arched Roman bridge over the Vez River.

It was while I was on this bridge that I saw her walking slowly from the residential part of town towards me. Every now and again, when she saw me lifting my camera up to focus on a runner(s) behind her, she would stop and clap her hands, sportingly cheering the runners.

I noticed she had plucked some flowers and was holding them in her hands as she continued across the bridge. When she reached where I was, she just stopped, smiled, and looked at me. I responded likewise and said, “Como você está?” (the only Portuguese phrase I know besides “Bom Dia” and “Obrigada”). Her smile got bigger and she replied “Eu estou bem.”

“Photo?” I asked, while pointing at my camera. As if she has prepared for that moment all along, she slipped the flowers behind her ears and waited for me to click my camera. And I clicked…📸

Faces of the World : Arcos de Valdevez, PORTUGAL - As I stood on the bridge waiting for the runners, this gentleman walked up to me and started speaking to me in Portuguese. I used gestures to indicate to him that I do not speak the language, but that did not deter him from continuing to speak to me. I responded with the only way I knew how – a lot of smiles and gestures; also a little bit of Spanish thrown in here and there 😉!

This encounter reminded me of a previous one when we stayed with a friend of ours in his grandfather’s cottage high up in the Pelion mountains in Greece. We had arrived late at night and did not meet his grandfather, who had gone to bed early. The following morning, I met him in the kitchen. He started speaking to me in Greek continuously despite my gestures indicating to him that I do not speak the language. When my husband and our friend came back from their run, he turned to them and asked, “Who is this lady? Such a pitiful thing – she is mute!!” They were rolling on the floor laughing, leaving me and the grandfather totally confused. 🤪
