Faces of the World : Arcos de Valdevez, PORTUGAL – Arcos de Valdevez is a very quiet town when there are no tourists around. Life moves on slowly and peacefully here, amidst its beautiful tranquil setting of a beautiful arched Roman bridge over the Vez River.
It was while I was on this bridge that I saw her walking slowly from the residential part of town towards me. Every now and again, when she saw me lifting my camera up to focus on a runner(s) behind her, she would stop and clap her hands, sportingly cheering the runners.
I noticed she had plucked some flowers and was holding them in her hands as she continued across the bridge. When she reached where I was, she just stopped, smiled, and looked at me. I responded likewise and said, “Como você está?” (the only Portuguese phrase I know besides “Bom Dia” and “Obrigada”). Her smile got bigger and she replied “Eu estou bem.”
“Photo?” I asked, while pointing at my camera. As if she has prepared for that moment all along, she slipped the flowers behind her ears and waited for me to click my camera. And I clicked…📸
