This is my clapperboard. It’s the only picture I have (sorry Emily). It’s a little out of focus but you’ll notice it is called ‘Sarah #1’ & has a ‘Practice safe sets’ badge from the international cinematographers guild.
Why have I named my clapperboard Sarah?
Because in 2014, AC Sarah Jones lost her life due to negligent producers who assured the crew that they had permission to film on active train tracks and would be safe. They were not. Shortly after, Sarah became the face of a movement called ‘Safety for Sarah’ to improve conditions for the cast and crew on set.
This week I found out that a producer that I used to work with managed to ‘lose control at 70mph’ and flip his car, rolling it so much the rescue staff were amazed he walked away. I’m glad he’s alright but I’ve been thinking about this a lot. This same producer had myself and a freelancer in his car and drove 120 mph for over an hour to make a ferry. Then throughout the shoot drove around the Isle of Man recklessly, hitting the curb because he was texting and taking blind corners at ridiculous speeds. I thought I was going to die often in his car.
I don’t know if I would have been with him at the time of the accident but if I had not left the company I know it’s a possibility. Meaning I may have died on my birthday. This driver had a responsibility. To ensure the safety of his passengers and others on the road.
This is why Safety for Sarah matters.
There’s another reason for this post. Today Harvey Weinstein was expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Despite his huge success and involvement with iconic films it is agreed, with excess, that he is not welcome in the industry for his actions. He’s not the first and he won’t be the last but he will be made an example of and this is a huge win.
I believe Safety for Sarah is fighting for safer sets, not just physically but mentally as well. This is the greatest industry to be involved with and we will not let people with poor attitudes/actions taint that.
