I started skiing at 4 years old when my Dad took me over to Willis Case golf course in Denver, put me on a pair of Hot Doggie skis and pushed me down a big hill. That's how I was introduced to this great sport that I can't live without.
We spent a lot of time skiing in the mountains of Vail, Colorado together. I have some of my best memories skiing with my family during those early years of life.
Once I got my driver's license and a ski pass at 16, I was in the mountains almost every weekend. At that point, I started to explore snowboarding. We owned a skate/snowboard shop at the time and I caught a lot of flack from our snowboard team about me being a skier. The first three days snowboarding were painful, but I kept at it and got pretty good over the next few years.
A few more years went by and I picked up skiing again while I was living in China. Ironically, the hills we were skiing on there had a poma life and were part of a golf course - back to my roots! I was reminded how much I loved two boards as opposed to one and reminisced about how I started my ski journey with my Dad at Willis Case, of all places.
Today, my wife and two kids are all snowboarders. However, I have stuck with skiing while maintaining a love and respect for snowboarding. I enjoy skiing just about any terrain, but favor steeps and trees on a powder day.
I'm still chasing the ❄️pow like I was when I was 4 and I hope that this post encourages you to keep getting after it. I hope to see you out there on the hill this year!
