Yoga is really a journey of self inquiry (vichara or atma-vichar). The asanas, or physical practice of yoga being ONE of our tools. For me, my mat is where all my work is done.
Feel tired, get on my mat.
Feel sad, get on my mat.
Feel happy, get on my mat.
Feel anxious, get on my mat.
Feel anything, get on my mat.
Then.....
I injured my hip flexor, and got on my mat. Again and again and again.
Then...
On Monday I taught 3 classes and did a self practice.
On Tuesday I woke up feeling like I had had a collision with a freight train.
My back and hips had seized sending my ITB’s into chaos. My diaphragm had gone into lockdown making every breath painful. Even my quads hurt. I couldn’t roll over let alone get on my mat.
Shit.
But this is exactly on point.
When we are robbed of our props and our ego, when all that is left is the I, the self. Self inquiry can really begin.

Growing up I used to think I knew a lot, now I know I know very little.

There is beauty in the unknown, it’s what keeps life interesting, and for me I’m happy to be on this journey as it all unfolds.

Session 3 today of our ‘Learn to Meditate in the Real World’ Course at @mortimerhouse. After 2 sessions yesterday, it’s amazing to see the progress.

We’ve learned the technique, reviewed, put it into our daily lives and today we go deeper. Grateful for this group who were bold enough to step in. #dailypractice

~ NOT ALONE ~
As I write this, I’m sitting in a crowded restaurant in the middle of Dublin city centre, on a busy Friday evening... on my own but not alone.

Last night, I started a meditation and breathing practice before bed. This ritual has been inspired by the brilliant @maxstromofficial and his book ‘A Life Worth Breathing’.
__
I’m trying to be more conscientious, patient and understanding of my fellow man. For me to do this, I need to first understand myself better. To be able to sit with my thoughts. Without judgement or expectation. This is incredibly difficult for me and that’s why I know it’s work that is worthwhile.

Ps I use the term ‘fellow man’ in the ye olde English kinda way... it includes all genders! ✌🏼 __

Never in my life did I think I’d write a book, never the less have it translated into different languages around the world. This is the Hungarian version that was just released, can you believe it!

This book was a culmination of a vision, an idea, a movement to change the way we see the practice all around the world. I’m continually inspired by what we created.
_
It took almost 3 years to write it and I’m honoured to have written every word, and taken every single photo you see in the book. Each BOY tells his story, but in turn, this book tells mine, a journey throughout the world meeting like minded dudes who are sharing the practice in their own unique way.

Thank you to everyone that made this possible, thank you for helping make this project possible. And it’s only just the beginning.

DONT HATE - MEDITATE
I’m so happy and grateful to have gotten back to a meditation routine and hoping it can inspire others to do the same.

[TUMMY BUG TEACHINGS]

It’s a few minutes after midnight on the 24th of April. “Happy birthday to me!” I think to myself as I hug a toilet in Uttarkashi, a small town in the foothills of the Himalayas. For my birthday, India gave me fever and tummy bugs. Awe-some. But hey, at least I’ve been properly initiated in traveling this mad part of the world. And maybe there’s even some symbolic meaning to all this agony: ‘out with the old, in with the new’…

I’m not sure if it was this positive thinking or the Ayurvedic medicine a kind man gave to me, but in the morning, I feel much better. Moreover, I feel 28. Which is new, because I’ve always felt either younger or older but never my age. Now, as I walk outside, squinting my eyes against the fierce Indian sun, I am present. Perhaps a bit weak in the knees and alone in the mountains, but fully here and in the now.

One of the foundational texts of ancient Indian philosophy, the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali, begins with the phrase Atha yogānuśhāsanam: ‘Now, the teachings of yoga’. The teachings of yoga do not start at any odd moment, they start atha, now. This is an auspicious moment, in which one, after sufficient preparation, embarks on a journey to yoga, or union. A balance of opposites, which leads to a harmonious life – and many other big things which I do not yet quite comprehend, such as liberation, universal consciousness, and enlightenment. But what I have come to understand, being here in India, is that yoga is so much more than challenging postures and breathing deeply. It is a philosophy of life, a deep ethical system, it is an art of living, an art of dying. It is an experiential science of mind and body, a psychology of mindfulness, a study of one’s true nature, awareness of self. And being here in India, I’ve come to realise that, even though I’ve been practicing and teaching yoga, my journey only starts now. Now, I am ready to learn. Now, the teachings begin.
