16 years ago, when I first started to bodybuild, I didn't really pick it up to compete in bodybuilding. I wanted to attain the look for other reasons. Firstly, it was to deter the many school bullies who picked on me, and kick some of their asses should the opportunity arise.
School bullying itself was the main problem, but bullies weren't the only ones who contributed to it. The people around contributed to it greatly. Laughing at, ridiculing and rejecting a bully victim just makes the aftermath worse for a victim. Your self esteem runs low, and you start to believe that you are a second class citizen.
I remember being ridiculed and rejected. I remember being chased away when I wanted to join my schoolmates' table during recess. Either that, or I had to help them all buy stuff before I could sit peacefully with them. Maybe not peacefully. I remember running into some of them after graduating, and when I tried to say 'Hi', they turned away. It was as if that was who I was meant to be, the reject. But I had other ideas.
Having faced all that, I told myself that I will make it, and will start with improving my look first. I hoped I would be featured on the front cover of some magazines and on billboards. Wishful thinking for a guy who was 1.65cm tall and weighing 47kg?? Now at 1.71cm and 85kg, the idea was that one day, these very folk would see me again, the new me, and start reminiscing about how they treated me and others like me. The only catch was that I won't be looking back, cos I would be on a billboard. Here is that billboard...
(Just for clarification, this was an ad I auditioned for as a model)
