Feeling super excited and happy to have my first photography exhibition on 18 May 2018 at the lovely offices of Sinclair + May @thelawyerslunchbox which seeks to highlight the strength, fury, beauty and grace of everyday women and girls.
The pics consist of candid moments and portraiture, which celebrate the innocence in the moments of joy, the throw-your-head-back laughs, sincere smiles and the beauty of the mundanity of the moments in between!
I recently started, ‘Vanessa Shambrook Photography’ and take pics of weddings, lifestyle and portraits! PM me at vanessa.shambrook@gmail.com if you have a special occasion or would love some pics taken for the fun of it!

ESTATE PLANNING FOR BUSINESS OWNERS// Succession law (Wills and Estates) gets its name from the very fact that your Will represents exactly how your Estate should move from you to others – ‘succession’. Unless you have a formal business succession agreement in place, your Will is an important tool to ensure your family business is protected well into the future. Talk to us about how to protect the future of your business – you have worked too hard to leave it to chance. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF DINZI// My day usually starts quite early these days now that I am expecting twins! I kick off my mornings with a cup of tea and a read of the daily news, before getting ready to head to work. A short drive is all it takes to get from my home in Thornbury to our office in Clifton Hill, however, post-maternity leave, I plan to work off the baby weight by walking to work instead! My role as a Graduate Solicitor at Sinclair & May is varied and interesting - I assist the senior lawyers with a range of corporate and property matters, and also work on business development projects which I really enjoy. Working at Sinclair & May is incredibly refreshing - no day is ever the same! Our team has the privilege of assisting a variety of clients and we all work hard to ensure that every client receives a great service. For me, one of the highlights of working at Sinclair & May is being part of a fantastic team and working with colleagues who have expertise in various legal fields, and who are willing to share their knowledge in order to build a successful business together. As a qualified overseas lawyer, I am currently completing the Practical Legal Training course with the hope of being admitted in Victoria very shortly, so I usually head home after work to do a few hours of study before catching up with my husband for dinner in our local area. After dinner, I spend a few hours focusing on my home textiles company (ULO Australia) which I launched last year, and then unwind by reading a few chapters of my book or phoning friends and family back in London before heading to bed. #femaleled #sinclairandmay #cliftonhill #cityofyarra #womeninbusiness #healthylegalshealthybusiness #womenempowerment

EXPANDING YOUR TEAM// Bringing on a new contractor or employee is an exciting time for business owners. Making sure you document the arrangement and ensuring you comply with your legal obligations is very important. We regularly help small business owners prepare their employment or contractor agreements and help them to feel confident in having their new staff member start. We can also give you useful tips for inducting your staff, how and when to conduct performance reviews, what policies you should have in place and how to terminate them if it doesn’t work out. #employment #team #teamwork #employmentlaw #womeninbusiness #femaleled #sinclairandmay #employmentlawyers #healthylegalshealthybusiness

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF LOU// Balancing my paralegal role with the final year of my law degree requires kindness to myself. I am not a super-woman but I am a mother, a wife, a friend and a passionate businesswoman in law. My typical day begins with Vinyasa Flow yoga at Good Vibes in Northcote, setting my mind and body up for a productive day. I then deliver coffees home for my husband and son for an early morning caffeine boost. My adult daughter lives in NSW so it is very possible she will ring at some point during the day to tell me all about her world.

I walk the 15 minutes from my Northcote home to our office in Clifton Hill, grateful for the incidental exercise that gives me thinking time about the day ahead. My role at Sinclair + May is varied and engaging: from strategic planning to managing Probate applications, or compiling a brief for a barrister. My passion is Wills & Estates, and I enjoy assisting our clients plan their wishes so that they have peace of mind. My goal is to make our clients feel that their needs are being met and in times of legal stress, we are there to help them.

At 5pm I travel to Swinburne University to attend class. I enjoy the challenge of learning new legal principles and making the connection between the theory and practice. As Sinclair + May’s paralegal I have the privileged opportunity to apply my learning well before graduation!

Before bed I enjoy a cup of green tea and a few pages of a good book to quiet the mind. #healthylegalshealthybusiness #sinclairandmay #cliftonhill #paralegal #smallbusiness #smallbiz #lawfirm #lawfirmlife #lawyer #superwoman

Day 12: Make sure you are only paying what you should when leasing a premises. We regularly review leases and find that the tenant has been made responsible for things they shouldn't be! From essential safety measures to structural repairs, you need to make sure as a retail tenant, the landlord is only passing on costs which they are permitted to.

Day 11: Document your arrangements with supplier! If your business reputation depends on your supplier delivering quality products on time, you need a supply agreement. This is a contract between the supplier and your small business which will hopefully protect your interests if the supplier fails to meet their obligations. You should make sure pricing, volume, payment, exclusivity, the term and product quality are covered off. Considering labelling requirements and dispute resolution is also important. Having a good agreement will protect you in the long run. #businesslawyer #startup #smallbusiness #melbournelawyers #smallbusinessmelbourne #advice #melbourne #smallbusinessvictoria #lawyer#sinclairmay #auslaw #melbournelawfirm #womeninbusiness #entrepreneur #smallbiz #ausbiz #trustedadvisor #sinclairandmay #innernorth #cityofyarra #yarrabusinesses #localbusiness #supportlocalbusiness #healthylegalshealthybusiness

Day 10: Hire your staff properly. Do you know the difference between an employee and contractor? Do you understand the consequences of a sham contracting arrangement? We help lots of small business owners set up their employment contracts and independent contractor agreements to help protect them. It is also important to make sure you have policies and procedures in place! Like every relationship, it is crucial to ensure the terms of the arrangement are clear. #businesslawyer #startup #smallbusiness #melbournelawyers #smallbusinessmelbourne #advice #melbourne #smallbusinessvictoria #lawyer#sinclairmay #auslaw #melbournelawfirm #womeninbusiness #entrepreneur #smallbiz #ausbiz #trustedadvisor #sinclairandmay #innernorth #cityofyarra #yarrabusinesses #localbusiness #supportlocalbusiness #healthylegalshealthybusiness

HOW TO START A BUSINESS Day 9: Understand your obligations under Australian Consumer Law. Small businesses have obligations to treat their consumers fairly. Undertstaind consumer guarantees for the goods and services you sell is crucial, as is understanding the different types of warranties you can offer, what the rules are around product safety, debt collection and even lay-by arrangements. The ACCC has a bunch of helpful resources for small business and is a good place to start your research.

Day 8: Client Agreements and Terms and Conditions
Once your business is ready to go, you should have in place key agreements which govern the provision of your services or sale of products. It is important that your client's and customers understand the rules around their relationship with you. Are they entitled to cancellations, when can they get a refund, what happens if delivery fails? Client agreements and terms and conditions are so important to ensuring the relationship is clear from the start and your customers know what their rights are. It is not something to wait 3 years before getting right! #businesslawyer #startup #smallbusiness #melbournelawyers #smallbusinessmelbourne #advice #melbourne #smallbusinessvictoria #lawyer#sinclairmay #auslaw #melbournelawfirm #womeninbusiness #entrepreneur #smallbiz #ausbiz #trustedadvisor #sinclairandmay #innernorth #cityofyarra #yarrabusinesses #localbusiness #supportlocalbusiness #healthylegalshealthybusiness

HOW TO START A BUSINESS Day 7: Social Media and Marketing Strategies
One of my key marketing strategies has been social media. Getting your business on insta and Facebook is critical these days. Your consumers will look at your profile and page as a method of research. Give them a reason to want to work with you! Useful information about your products and services and telling them who is behind the brand is a good start. We all want to know the why behind a business. #businesslawyer #startup #smallbusiness #melbournelawyers #smallbusinessmelbourne #advice #melbourne #smallbusinessvictoria #lawyer#sinclairmay #auslaw #melbournelawfirm #womeninbusiness #entrepreneur #smallbiz #ausbiz #trustedadvisor #sinclairandmay #innernorth #cityofyarra #yarrabusinesses #localbusiness #supportlocalbusiness #healthylegalshealthybusiness

Day 6: Protect Your Brand
Registering your business name is a great start but trademarking gives you an immediately set of enforceable rights if someone tries to copy your brand. Why should you consider trademarking? It is an important element to brand protection and a trademark protects the identity and distinctiveness a seller has created in relation to a particular good or service in the market. Trademarking not only provides immediately enforceable rights against any one else trying to use that brand name or logo (or one materially similar) but a trademark is a type of intellectual property asset, capable of ownership and transfer of ownership. If your brand becomes famous, your trademark can become a valuable asset which can be bought and sold in the future. Trademarking a brand is something that many businesses overlook, but particularly in the small business space, there seems to be a misconception that trademarking is only something that large or well-established businesses should be worried about doing. In fact the opposite is true - trademarking not only carves out your brand from the others in the market but protects it from copy-catting (intentionally or otherwise) and therefore preserves the value in your brand that you have strived to build. For a small business, your uniqueness or point of difference can be one of the most valuable things you have to offer and to trade from. We have helped a number of small businesses with brand protection in the form of trademarking, which means that if there ever is an issue in the future with a potential competitor using the same or a materially similar brand or logo, our clients have immediately enforceable rights against such a person.

Day 5: open a bank account and get your accounting under control. I started with a spreadsheet and let me tell you now, I wish I had just signed up to Xero at the start. It makes reconciling accounts, issuing invoices and paying staff, when you get there, so much easier. I also strongly suggest opening a separate bank account even as a sole trader as it will make things easier should you ever change to a more sophisticated structure. If you are setting up company, trust or partnership, you need a separate account! #businesslawyer #startup #smallbusiness #melbournelawyers #smallbusinessmelbourne #advice #melbourne #smallbusinessvictoria #lawyer#sinclairmay #auslaw #melbournelawfirm #womeninbusiness #entrepreneur #smallbiz #ausbiz #trustedadvisor #sinclairandmay #innernorth #cityofyarra #yarrabusinesses #localbusiness #supportlocalbusiness #healthylegalshealthybusiness

Day 4: Get Insurance!
Sounds obvious but so many small business owners forget the importance of professional indemnity insurance. While you are at it, you may want to explore your options for income protection insurance. We suggest asking a trusted accountant or insurance broker for what is available and will best suit your needs. #businesslawyer #startup #smallbusiness #melbournelawyers #smallbusinessmelbourne #advice #melbourne #smallbusinessvictoria #lawyer#sinclairmay #auslaw #melbournelawfirm #womeninbusiness #entrepreneur #smallbiz #ausbiz #trustedadvisor #sinclairandmay #innernorth #cityofyarra #yarrabusinesses #localbusiness #supportlocalbusiness #healthylegalshealthybusiness

Day 3: Register your business name and get an ABN
This can be done in 15 minutes (once you have found the name). It is a crucial step in protecting your rights to use a business name and you often need an ABN before setting up your website! Knowem is a great resource to check if the name you are wanting is used on social media! #businesslawyer #startup #smallbusiness #melbournelawyers #smallbusinessmelbourne #advice #melbourne #smallbusinessvictoria #lawyer#sinclairmay #auslaw #melbournelawfirm #womeninbusiness #entrepreneur #smallbiz #ausbiz #trustedadvisor #sinclairandmay #innernorth #cityofyarra #yarrabusinesses #localbusiness #supportlocalbusiness #healthylegalshealthybusiness
