I don't like mushrooms, but my daughter does. If you're in the same boat, either with mushrooms, or some other vegie, my best tips to include them in your family's diet without too much extra effort or discomfort on your part are:

1. Make friends with a food processor, blender, grater, or just a good knife. Make the ingredient as small as possible, and add it early in in the cooking process (e.g. when browning mince for Bolognese) to meld it together with the rest of the dish as thoroughly as you can.

2. Go the opposite route, and include the ingredient either whole or in large pieces. This will make it easy for you to avoid, and prevent the flavour spreading throughout the dish too much. Adding the ingredient toward the end of the cooking time usually helps with this too. Bonus: less prep work for you!

3. My favourite option: don't cook with it at all! Use it raw as finger food, which empowers your family members to choose to eat it themselves, involves minimal prep work, doesn't spread flavours, textures or smells you're not fond of, and doesn't require you to cook with an ingredient you're probably not familiar with using.

On the plate: strawberries, Jatz crackers, sugar snap peas, green beans, peanuts, mushroom, puffed corn, mandarin, and baby carrots.
