Win Son Restaurant in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. We love that @winsonbrooklyn, a Taiwanese American restaurant, repurposed the original #bodega awning and #signage from El Brillante, that was previously located in this #storefront. We photographed El Brillante in 2003 for our book, "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York". It always makes us happy when a new owner cares about the history and draws inspiration from the former tenant. #signgeeks #everything_signage #signcollective #type #typography #typevstime #dailytype #ig_signage

Horn & Hardart Automats were once a staple of life in New York. Well ahead of their time, the Automats displayed a wall of food and drink tantalizingly contained behind little glass doors. Deposit the right amount of change into one of those boxes and you had a meal in your hand. Simple. Efficient. And yes, ahead of its time. Today, restaurants like Eatsa play off this century-old idea. The last Horn & Hardart closed in 1991, but reminders lurk, like a ghost sign in midtown Manhattan. For years, this gem — a Horn & Hardart Retail Shop that instead sold prepackaged goods, unlike the Automats — you see before you was hidden behind new signage in Brooklyn, across the iconic Junior’s Restaurant. Kevin Walsh’s Forgotten New York reported earlier this week that this sign had emerged — and I knew I had to run fast! It’s part of a row of condemned stores. Development awaits. That’s all in the future. But for now, and likely not for long, this trace of the past, neon bullet holes and all, is seeing the light of day once last time — and surveying a very different Brooklyn. #retrologist

From the mid-1920s until the 1960s when interstates became the primary way to travel long distances, Burma Shave signs entertained many drivers. Typically, six signs with a witty saying would line the roads with the intent of capturing the driver's attention. Many have been recreated along stretches on Route 66, this particular one in Towanda, IL. Be sure to swipe though all of the pictures to get to the punchline! #bigbadcleanshavenwolf #burmashave #route66 #motherroad #enjoyillinois #vintageadvertising #tinsheetson66 #tinsheets

Bob's shoe repair shop in downtown Rapid City. I loved the idea of Cowboys being Re-shod here since 1946. You could see a line of repaired boots in the window. A perfect road trip find for me. •
