Amazing experience to watch this brilliant engineer defend his PhD dissertation yesterday. From our first friendship days as anatomy partners, dissecting the hand together...to at least two Odesza concerts....to the last couple years as a roommate at Café Clermont, it’s been inspiring to learn with him at our whiteboard or to share in mutual excitement of new data, strategies for querulous committee members, or swapping OR tales in our ad hoc late-night kitchen talks.
He’s been 💯 for me over the past few years of my personal life challenges, including when I was struggling in the run-up to end my PhD last year; I knew he’d have a battle-to-the-end too. We all do. But he saw through his setbacks with aplomb, making it all look easy, never once getting caught in the [confusion matrix]. . . . . . Haven’t seen him since (#Phd and MD life schedule) so I didn’t see the outcome of the deliberations, but given a strong prior—there’s a bottle of Champagne on our kitchen table—and a pre-defense P(PhD)=0.5....I’m willing to bet that P(PhD|🍾)> 0.95
Incredibly proud of watching @viratir develop into a world-traveling scholar-fellow, even a strong political organizer too. No matter where our careers take us, neurosurgery, plastics or the greater Academy, I’m proud to have shared space, coffee, idli and dosa with Dr. Vineet Tiruvadi, PhD (the first of his name!) #BME #MDPhD #SurgicalAnatomy #SignalProcessing #BayesianStatistics #FourierTransformYourself
