Everyone has days where things seem heavier. Days where you didn’t get enough sleep, where food has been a bit wonky, where stresses from different parts of your life congregate into a cloud of chaos. It happens. It happened today.
And while I could spout a pile of malarky and throw badass quotes at you about how Champions train through such times, I won’t. It would not be honest or right.
I will tell you that Champions also know when to stop. They prioritize the things that matter most and then know when to call it quits. They know when to rest. They understand that some fights are simply not worth it and that you can periodically go home out of it so that you can come back again refreshed to work better. They know the difference between wussiness and genuine extreme fatigue. They also know that you can defer certain things to the next day because getting them done matters more than precisely when.
The latter happened today. 5 hours of sleep because my shoulder was so uncomfortable that I couldn’t settle properly until I took Advil at 3am was enough to tip the balance. I got through all the sets of the main lifts, two sets of 8 RDLs at 115kg/253lbs, and then my shoulder was really hurting and my mind just crapped out. I ran totally out of steam. Took a break after this and knocked out a little accessory work but also recognized that it was time to call it a day and go home and eat good food and be with good people. One of the good sets shown, followed by three reps and reaching the end of a rope.
