Nigella Seeds also known as Kalonji and charnushka. Sometimes called black onion seed, and black caraway seed. Seeds of the Nigella Sativa, an annual flowering plant of the Ranunculacae family.
The seeds have a nutty, slightly bitter flavour and tastes like toasted onions with hints of oregano and cumin.
Used on flatbreads like naan and Turkish breads. Pairs well with potatoes and vegetables, also an essential ingredient in Panch Phora.
Nigella seeds, in fact, was found in Egyptian pharoah Tutankamun’s tomb. In Arabic culture, nigella seeds is known as habbatul Baraka, meaning the “seed of blessing.”
