Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd
Monstrous Compendium 6 Kara-Tur Appendix
This MC populates the "eastern adventures" Kara-Tur setting with a great collection of (mostly?) japanese and chinese beings for the players to encounter.
There are famous yōkai — hengeyokai, kappa, tengu, yuki onna; spirits — centipede, flame (these reminded me of the "Bombs" of the Final Fantasy series), nature, and stone; and even a few kaijū (gargantua) — hi, Mothra!
While some of the monsters have been re-visited in later D&D products, or trickled out through Pathfinder Beastiary volumes, most have stayed in the Kara-Tur setting, and will likely be unfamiliar to many players (and DMs!).
The only drawback to the entries is that most have a strong eastern feel, which is great for such a setting but, mean that they might feel out of place in a more traditional fantasy game.
Alot can be done by simply changing the name and clothes of a monster, however, should you feel the need to do so.
Honorable mentions go to:
▪ Kappa — rude, water carrying pranksters (3 flavors)
▪ Oni — ferocious tyrants (3 sizes)
▪ Shirokinukatsukami — kind eater of dreams
▪ Tako — weaponized intelligent octopi [and the one I chose to draw for may]
▪ Tengu — small progenitors of the current "kenku" (2 sizes)
▪ Yuki-Onna — human-flesh dining force of nature
The Kara-Tur Monstrous Compendium Appendix is probably available as a PDF on dmsguild.com, but I didn't check.
[Shelf Life Sunday feature things curious or cool that I may not interact with on a daily basis, but wouldn't want to be without]
