Mars Blended malt whisky. Immediately enjoyable and definitely a daily drinker! Sweet smelling fruity, vaguely peaty and a little spicy. Long finish with a little sherry and a lingering vanilla nose. Delicious!

Mars Komagatake 1986 30 years old
In 1985, Hombo Breweries opened the Mars Shinshu distillery in Miyata village at the foot of the Komagatake Alps in Japan's Nagano prefecture. This 30-year-old single malt is one of a series of 3 releases with the artwork done by Japanese painter, Kozo Ikenaga. It is currently one of the oldest whiskies ever produced by the distillery and is limited to only 619 bottles.

Mars Komagatake The Revival 2011 is a vatting of lightly peated (8ppm) whisky exclusively matured in ex-bourbon casks, bottled at vatting strength (58%), and ultimately producing only 6,000 bottles. – Nonjatta.com

Mars Shinshu (Hombo) The Revival 2011 is the first release from the 'new regime'. Mars stopped distilling whisky in 1992. After a hiatus of almost two decades, they started again. The first spirit produced under the new regime - under master distiller Koki Takehira, that is - came off the stills in February 2011. It was kept in a stainless tank for a few months before being filled into wood - which is why the people at Mars had to wait until summer 2014 to be able to launch their first 3yo.

Mars could have been one of the first great Japanese whiskies and Kiichiro Iwai one of its founding fathers. Yet the distillery was ahead of its time and ended up instead closing its doors twice in its first 60 years of existence. Re-opened in 2011, it has been re-born for a third time and returned to the forefront of the scene with a young single malt distilled in 2011, indirectly inherited and resulting from the expertise of a certain Masataka Taketsuru (Nikka). – Whisky.fr

Situated between the north and south Japanese Alps, Mars Shinshu is Japan’s highest whisky distillery, at nearly 800 meters. The Hombo family have been distilling for more than a century and they added whisky to their repertoire in 1949 in Kagoshima. That was the southernmost whisky made in Japan until 1984, when all whisky production was moved to the current location in Nagano. – TokiwaImports.com

Spent my Sunday at Hombo Mar's Shinshu Distillery. Not very well known outside of Japan yet with only a few bottling's out.
