#stopsharkfinning 🦈 Fins from as many as 73 million sharks end up in the global market every year. The demand for fins is one of the greatest threats facing shark populations worldwide. Unfortunately, #SharkFinSoup has gained popularity. The sharks are caught, fins sliced off and the shark is dropped back into the ocean to die from drowning. Horrific! 🦈 In the US contact your Congress members and let them know you want them to support the Shark Fin Trade Elimination Act! #savethesharks #savetheoceans

Day 19 🦈 Scorched
(Gotta get caught up after falling a few days behind!)
*
The soupfin shark is one of the most commonly consumed sharks in the world. Some countries use the fins to make soup (as the name implies), some use the meat for "fish" and chips, and others use the liver oil for a multitude of purposes.
*
But, like most sharks, its body is high in toxic compounds like mercury, lead, and other neurotoxins. Even if the meat is *scorched*, those toxins remain and pose a hazard to human health.
*
Ending the consumption of sharks is just as important to us as it is to the sharks. It is an outdated practice that needs to go extinct before the sharks do!

This picture is proof of what is happening around the globe and even in your own hometown. This photo was taken in Montreal and shows us how much work needs to be done to stop shark fin import & the trade in Canada. Change wont happen if you dont take charge and make it happen!! Use your voice for good and help create a better tomorrow by saying how seeing this still happening in 2018 is wrong!! Head over to my bio to sign my petition if you want to help me shut down the shark fin trade in Canada. 🙏💙 #shark #sharkconservation

@Regran_ed from @willallenexplore - Not a beautiful pic by any means but this is Shark fin and Fish Maw(dried swim bladder) for sale in china town Montreal!! It’s for sale in your own back yard people. If you want to save sharks and protect the oceans write your mayor and member of parliament and tell them you don’t agree with this and don’t want it in our city. Then go to these stores and tell them why you will never shop there. And please go see Sharkwater: Extinction in cineplex theatres! #sharkwaterextinction #sharkfin #sharkfinsoup #savesharks - #regrann - #regrann

People like this give me hope. All living creatures will become beautiful to you when you start seeing them for the individuals they are, rather than what they can provide if we exploit them. Sharks have been given such an undeserving reputation as being these ruthless killing machines, when that's simply not the case. The other thing is that advocates of fishing will make false claims backed by shoddy scientific studies to continue fishing and feel so remorse for what they do. There is more than enough science out there however, as well as common sense, to know that fish do suffer and feel pain. In fact, fish have more than 20 pain receptors just in the area of their lips. Having a hook in there is painful for them. The very thing fishermen argue against is what makes their "sport" so fun to them. The fish, fighting for his or her life, tries to swim away from the fishing line. If you fish, like I used to as a kid who didn't think about these things, I ask you to look deeper and find a way to have fun where you are not hurting other living beings. There are so many activities that are fun and don't cause harm. You could even go fish plastic out of the water and help these animals 😉

Repost @leangreenie 73,000,000 sharks are killed for their fins each year. With the fins being the only 'valuable' parts of their bodies, fishermen are often known to cut off sharks' fins while the animals are still alive and then dump their bodies overboard. Unable to swim, mortally injured sharks sink to the ocean floor where they slowly drown or are eaten alive.

Here with @oneoceandiving, we have a Shark ID program. We study any distinct markings, scars, or any uniqueness on an individual shark and give them an ID name once we have photos from both the sides and top of the shark. This helps us keep track of shark populations and learn more about them. This gorgeous female tiger shark featured in the video below is know here as #SharkIDNikki, who made an appearance yesterday morning. If you’re interested in learning about our local shark population and getting to the know the individuals, check out @oneoceansharks to learn about the IDs! We can’t help but grow more attached to these incredible predators when we begin to see them as individuals. ❤️ Each have their own personalities and behaviors, making them beautifully unique and special animals. #HelpSaveSharks #TurnFearIntoFascination #oneoceandiving #shark #sharkdiving #tigershark #ecotourism #oceanconservation #swimwithsharks say NO to #sharkfishing #sharkfinning #sharkfinsoup as well as shark products like #sharkteeth #sharkjaws and #squalene which is an shark-derived ingredient found in many cosmetic products.

So happy she came by and made a cameo on the red helium shooting for an educational 180 degree immersive piece that 2 million people will see (Stay tuned for more info) What a stunning shark to be featured for so many to see the truth and absolute grace of sharks ❤️😍❤️🦈❤️😍. @juansharks and I have known #sharkid #sharkidNikki aka #sharkidsparkles for almost 12 years and we’ve seen her come and go with many scars. Honestly she’s one of the most gentle non aggressive apex predators I’ve ever met. Forever grateful for time with sharks. If more people knew her the way I am so fortunate to, they to would probably devote their life to speaking up for them. #helpsavesharks #savesharks #savetheocean

The pelagic thresher shark Alopias pelagicus is a species of shark that shares the name “thresher” with two other species: the common thresher and the bigeye thresher. The pelagic thresher is the smallest out of the 3 sharks with its maximum length of about 330 cm or 10 feet. The pelagic thresher is only found within the tropical and temperate regions of the Pacific and Indian oceans, while the other two species are found circumglobally in most tropical waters (Smith et al. 2008). They are epipelagic, meaning that they frequent open oceans where they tend to hang high in the water column and rarely come close to shore (IUCN Reardon et al. 2009). There is little known about the diet and exact migration patterns of pelagic threshers besides that they tend to hug the equator in the winters, and dissipate in the summers. Thresher sharks as a whole are considered vulnerable, due to the high demand for #sharkfinsoup and other products that utilize the oil in their livers for moisturizing effects (IUCN Reardon et al. 2009). For species of shark such as threshers, in which knowledge is lacking, it’s important that we share their stories and their lives with others in order to bring awareness to their vulnerable states and further pursue proper conservation efforts for these beautiful beings.
