Why do your formulas look like a bunch of various leaves & sticks that we scraped up from out of the garden, rather than just seeing the one herb, as you will in these posts? What’s the importance of this?
In Chinese medicine, we use a formula, rather than an individual herb. The art is in the composition of the formula, rather than putting in a herb does this, and another that does that.
But if a particular herb has specific qualities, then why don’t we just do it this way?
In Chinese Medicine, we see importance in the amount of a herb that we use, as well as the ratios of that herb within the formula.
Chai Hu (burpleurum) pictured here, has various qualities which are utilised by ensuring that we use specific amounts.
Use a small quantity, and you tap into Chai Hu’s ability to raise the Yang Qi, where it is used to treat disorders such as prolapse & diarrhoea. Large doses harness Chai Hu’s action of draining heat & harmonising the ShaoYang, where we use it in cases of alternating fever & chills, & rib side pain. A moderate dose of Chai Hu focuses the herbs action of spreading Liver Qi, treating symptoms such as emotional instability & menstrual problems.
Without the other herbs within the formula, directing the focus of the herbs in this manner would not be possible.
