As my birthday rolls around in a few days, I have been seriously struggling to find something I want as a gift. Better yet, something I truly need. On my journey to living with less, it can be hard when special occasions come up that often require purchases to be made and gifts to be given. It may seem difficult to buy for a minimalist or even an eco-conscious person. In my search, I have found a few things that others may also want in an effort to live with less:
1) Compost bin
Whether you live in an apartment or with a small yard, you can compost as well! The Food Cycler's Composter is made to turn scraps into soil within hours! If you already have a compost pile, you can use a stainless steel pale to hold scraps until you are ready to place them outside in the pile. Either way, you are definitely lessening your waste.
2) Shampoo Bar
Personally, I have used Lush's Honey I Washed My Hair bar. This is a great idea because it has zero packaging and is a necessity.
You can never have too many plants!! Not only do they look aesthetically pleasing, they also naturally clean the air!
Recently, I discovered a pair that can be ordered online that is made from algal blooms that hurt photosynthetic marine life. This is the ultimate gift for someone that wants to lessen negative impacts on the world. Other retailers are in the process of creating biodegradable shoes.
Tickets to a concert, movie, train show, or even to Disney World are greatly appreciated! Experiences as gifts make great memories!
Whatever your heart desires, there is most likely a way to make it less environmentally harmful. Ask a person what they have been needing. Minimalism doesn't mean deprivation. It's about realizing what you truly need and appreciating what you have. Make room for other things in your life besides possessions.
