I walked outside to take in the sunshine. Its rained for the last week and everything seems to be blooming. The Annabelle Hydrangea is in full bloom and is a favorite landscaping feature of mine. I have 3 of these beauties. Do you have a favorite plant?

I wait all year for this: Cardiocrinum giganteum (giant Himalayan lily)

Happy birthday to me #shadegarden #michigan #garden

Hall’s Honeysuckle vine—wish you could smell the amazing fragrance filling the garden. Lovely white blossoms fade to shades of yellow. Vigorous climber, does well in part shade. But can be invasive in some areas—so don’t plant near natural areas.

These fuchsia buds were closed yesterday and today they bloomed and became an instantaneous hummingbird magnet. First of several hardy fuchsias to bloom in the shade garden.

Absolutely loving our Mini Penny Hydrangea. It’s the perfect size for a compact garden like ours! So amazing!!

Exciting news -- the "family" here at Gardens for Ghosts is growing! Meet the Hursts! I've been noticing these particular graves since I started working on Julia's plot in early spring and recently got the go-ahead to "adopt" them. The stones are pretty worn, so I'll have to do some additional research on the occupants. I do know they're family of John Hurst, a Victorian druggist. Planted this morning with some new compost (and tangled with So. Many. Rocks.....and spiders) and currently home to all native shade plants from a great local nursery (shoutout to Redbud Native Plants!). The smaller grave has maidenhair fern and bleeding heart. The closer one has been started with Great Solomon's Seal, Lady Fern, Coral Bells, and wild sweet William. I'm so excited to have both shade and sunny plots to work with and to see how everything spreads out. My ideas for the flowery future of these spaces are overflowing! #gravegarden #gravegardeners #victorian #nativeplants #shadegarden #ferns #maidenhairfern #ladyfern #graveyardsofinstagram

She’s slowly making her entrance. #Enchantress #blue #hydrangea #summer #blooming #inmygarden #shadegarden #landscape 💙 ➡️.... scroll for a close-up to show scale.... that front flower head is 12” across! And those black stems.....oh my. I think the pinkish Endless Summer across the stream has to be feeling a bit like a wallflower.... I know I would. #hydrangeas #gardenlove #gardenenvy #growbeautifully @monroviaplants

All the rain we’ve had this week certainly has everything looking beautifully lush for the moment. Falling crape myrtle blossoms have left a sprinkling of summer snow on the so-called Altar of Beauty (just a little tongue in cheek humor- but it fits 😁). We put in a patio in 1998 on the west side of the house where there was no shade and it was blazing hot all summer. I planted three Natchez crape myrtles that were about the size of my index finger. They are now 30 feet tall and though they create a constant need to sweep they’re just so darn beautiful in every season. I need to try to go through old pictures and find some before and after shots I can post for you. Now I can sit out there when it’s 100 degrees outside and watch the birds or read if I want. Heavenly....

Looking for something to plant in a shady spot in the garden? Then look no further than Astilbe! This perennial is great for adding color and texture to a place where other flowers won't thrive. Available in multiple colors!
