The vagina (spelled the same way in Spanish, but pronounced va-he-na) is a canal that connects the uterus to the outside world. The cervix forms the interior end. It is elastic and flexible, but muscular and strong at the same time. It is naturally colonized by bacteria, and has natural lubricant. It receives the penis during sexual intercourse, allows for blood to pass during menstruation, and babies to pass during child birth. Some pathologies that can effect the vagina are vaginitis, which is inflammation of the vagina mostly due to yeast or bacterial infections; gonorrhea, chlamydia, and trichomoniasis, which are sexually transmitted infections; and vaginal cancer, which is extremely rare. If you have excessive bleeding, dryness, odorous discharge, itchiness, etc. make sure to visit the OB/GYN!
