I never knew Minneapolis’ sewers could look like castle turrets but somehow it seems perfectly fitting; castles in the sky must have their inverse. This giant brick pipe has been dug up as part of the full reconstruct of Hennepin Avenue from Lake Street south to 36th.
I keep heading back there, over and over, to see each step in the process, to feel the power of walking down the center of the street as if this city were for me, too, to survey the progress as if this public space had people potential.
And it does, and we’re not there quite yet, but we’re on our way. We have to be. Hennepin won’t always be so car-centric, but it remains to be seen if that’s because we choose each other, together, or we continue to spiral and lash out and burn fossil fuels until there is no one left to drive.
