One of the most common questions I get when I tell people I chase storms is: "What is the closest you have ever been to a tornado?". This is the answer to that.
This was during the Leoti, KS, tornadic supercell that produced two tornadoes. We missed the first one and were driving through under the base when the tour guide, Erik Burns yelled "Tornado!". At that point I could not see it, partially due to the fact I was sitting in the back right of the van but also because the tornado was very low contrast. I could only see it through the passenger window when it was really close and we had to accelerate to get away.
The tornado was quite small and evaporated shortly after we drove away (there is an amazing video of that from the car behind us, see the StormChasingUSA blog) so it wouldn't have flipped our car or anything but it was still quite exciting.
