One of my best friend's sons will turn 3 this month. I have watched him grow, learn to walk, babble for hours, and give the best hugs (when he wants to). He has learned to say our names, Osh (Josh) and Pam (Sam). And my favorite game to play with him is hide and seek. Wether he is counting or hiding, the result is always the same. When he sees you, he will yell in excitement and laugh for a good 30 seconds. It is the kind of innocent laughter that will make your heart melt. And we play this over and over again.
Because his mother and I are close, I have been fortunate enough to witness his upbringing since he was born. The celebrations and the discipline. And whenever he has a moment, the ones that include crying and pouting, where he doesn't get his way, his mother asks him a simple question.
She asks, "Do you have a happy heart?" And even though his answer is usually no, it's amazing to see what she is teaching him.
It is a wonderful lesson to start learning at such a young age. We should be grateful and have a happy heart even though we may feel mistreated or selfish.
It has been such a joy to be apart of his life. And I hope he is learning from his mother as much as I am.
