Mental health matters. That’s the point of this post if you’re only here for two lines.
So does representation, and I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately. When reflecting on both issues memories of Final Fantasy VII started to surface. Both the protagonist (Cloud), and antagonist (Sephiroth), suffer from mental health issues throughout the game. This mattered to me in my youth. Like Akira, FF7 offered me an empathetic escape from my every day struggles with my own mental health issues.
Though that struggle is still present, my life has nonetheless improved. I believe that is not only a result of my physical activity, cognitive therapy, diet, friends, and family... but also video games. They offer spaces for self-discovery, in addition to being dreamscapes to lose one’s self in. They are also mirrors to reflect upon and engage within. And thus I never feel ashamed when I pick up my pink controller and grind 🧠🎮🤓
