Fall back Friday: Time: 4:15 CET. I first met German astronaut Thomas Reiter immediately after the @europeanspaceagency’s launch of #Sentinel2b satellite on board an @arianespace 5 rocket. It was a very exciting day and night with over 100 participants inside #ESA’s ESOC (European Space Operations Center) in Darmstadt, #Germany. The room was electrifying after a successful #rocketlaunch in the middle of the night and filled with ESA officials, staff, scientists, and space enthusiasts that cane from all over. It was the first time that ESA had allowed so many people into its ESOC facility for a rocket launch. We named ourselves #Sentinerds (thanks to @astro_jolui for starting that moniker!) during the #Sentinel2Go launch. The Sentinel satellites are orbiting the earth gathering data and photos of our planet for climate measurements. As our climate changes on the planet, it is more imperative to understand how it affects earth and how things are shifting below atmosphere. The data is released to the public in an #opendata initiative and the images stunning.
I’ll never forget that all-nighter. It was my first rocket launch viewing and filled with moments of connection, learnings, and what Thomas reminded us of that evening, the precious gift that is our planet Earth and what it is to be human. Let’s do more #science collectively and make our world a better place! 🌍🚀🛰 . . . . . . . .
