As a young man, my father would say, “Art forget your reputation, and place a priority on your integrity.” We now live in a world obsessed with reputation, selfies, friend counts and like tallies. Did you know that there is now a new mental disorder called “Selfitis”? Psychologists have stated the average “selfitis” sufferer is a bigtime attention seeker. These individuals lack self-confidence while they strive to show their followers just the opposite. They take gym, bikini, shirtless workout, vacation and ducky, kissy, raised brow face selfies and post them regularly to boost their online status and reputation with others.
As a teen, had I purchased a camera and then took hundreds of pictures of just me, made a photo album and showed my family and friends my album, by me, about me… I would have been laying on a couch, talking to the best shrink in town.
Genuine integrity will always outperform reputation. So, when you are consistently posting a pic of you, stop and ask yourself why? Does that image create a stronger, healthier core you? Or perhaps are you masking some insecurity hoping others validate your self-worth?
What are you communicating with all those images, you take, pose for, alter and post? Your reputation is very fickle. However, your integrity is enduring.
