It's a day that feels like we're closer to the Sahara than Italy! A blasting hot wind, desiccating land - and skin. A heat factor of nearer 40 degrees C than the official shade temp would have us think
What I love though about the environment I live in, even in this incredible heat, is the way nature yields up just the right indigenous plants to resolve the season's skincare problems. Just outside our door, flourishing on parched soil, clinging to rocks, defying the odds, is the prickly or barbary pear (Opuntia ficus-indica). In our range formulas, we're drawing not just on its seed oil that is wonderfully rich in antioxidant Vitamin E, but also on its cool gel and secret bio-actives hidden behind those fierce spines.
Traditionally, farmers here in the southern Mediterranean have always known of the pear's naturally soothing, wound-healing, protective and hydrating properties. They'd snap off a leaf to smear on their sun-beaten skin. It's only recently, that the bio-actives in this gel have been extracted for use in skincare and we source ours from a small innovative company in Sicily.
If you'd like to know more about this remarkable Mediterranean ingredient in mature skincare, we've more over on the blog.
