Apparently today is #sciencefictionday, an unofficial designation that corresponds with the birthday of SciFi wizard Issac Asimov.
So, I thought I would post a few of my favourite SciFi movies or shows of recent years, in no particular order. Here’s Part 1 ☀️🌕 🤖: 'Sunshine' (2007)
Written by Alex Garland and directed by Danny Boyle, the film tells the story of a near future where the sun is burning out, and of an intrepid crew of astronauts tasked with delivering a nuclear warhead into the sun to reignite it. The third act does get a bit silly, but it is an overall excellent film, with an immaculate score by John Murphy. The film stars Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, Rose Byrne, and Benedict Wong. 'Moon' (2009)
This debut from director Duncan Jones (son of David Bowie) was my favourite film of that year. It tells the story of Sam Bell, a contract miner who is on a three-year stint mining gas on the Moon, waiting patiently to head home to his family. The movie stars mainly Sam Rockwell, as well as the voice of Kevin Spacey. Much like movies about artificial intelligence (this flick is not about that), it questions what it means to be human, and is brilliant and heartbreaking. For my money, it's Sam Rockwell's greatest performance. Further, the score by Clint Mansell is pretty well perfect. 'Ex Machina' (2014)
I mentioned Alex Garland earlier as a screenwriter. This is his directorial debut, and he doesn't disappoint. The film follows a genius programmer (Oscar Issac), his Touring test guinea pig (Domnhall Gleeson), and his android creation, Ava (Alicia Vikander). Much like 'Moon', the film discusses the rights of humanity, within the context of artificial intelligence being so human-like, that perhaps it should be treated as human, rather than a sub-species. Vikander is flawless in this film. #scifiday #sunrise #moon #exmachina #courtshake #scifi #sciencefiction #alexgarland #dannyboyle #duncanjones #davidbowie #samrockwell #aliciavikander #oscarisaac #domnhallgleeson #issacasimov #chrisevans #cillianmurphy #johnmurphy #clintmansell #rosebyrne #benedictwong #nationalsciencefictionday
