What pops in your head when you think of a Biomedical Scientist? ... don’t answer that. #scientistswholift 💪🏾

A working thyroid is amazing! .
Im back to my normal workouts. I’ve lost ~5% body fat and 10 lbs. I have energy and have stopped craving sweets.
.
I’m not back to where I was last year before my injuries but Im almost there. Now I just have to stay stabilized, build some muscle, and get my hair to regrow.

I have a million things to do. (Approximately) .
.
.
But first, I need a 30 minute workout to de-stress and refocus!
.
.
I do my best work when I’ve taken care of me. .

Starting back on a program this week
* Took a week off from the gym and just lived life and ate what I felt like eating
* Week 2 was focused on just getting moving and used to the accessory work again * Started back with the barbell last night and the focus was and will continue to be repatterning my squat
* Video #2 shows the shift in my squat I felt but didn't really notice while training
Seems to be caused by limited ankle mobility on the right side causing me to sink into my left side at my max depth
(What I think caused the injury)
* Worked on teaching myself to stay centered and only sink as far as my body would allow Me, and to get comfortable in that position * hammered unilateral work for quads, glutes and hamstring after 6x5 on squats at a weight light enough to allow me to stay focused on the position instead of the power, Tempo: 5252

Praying that my fur baby will be back to playing with my hair during workouts and getting into trouble again soon 😿

A pretty accurate picture of what’s really going on in my head...
Things have been very busy lately - almost too busy, but that’s what it’s like to run your own business.
Still, I’d never change it for anything. Working for myself has changed my life. I get to chose my clients and pick projects that interest me.
I love my job right now.
However, I need to make sure to get enough sleep. 💤💤💤

Guess what was the first I did after arriving in #cambridge
Yes, finding a gym with a short duration contract.

HIIT Exercise and Aging

Exercise is healthy, however why exercise is so healthy at a cellular level is still not yet understood.
It is known that there is an age related decline in mitochondrial proteins and in fact there are theories that place mitochondrial dysfunction at the centre of the aging process.
This study published in Cell Metabolism found that high intensity interval training was particularly beneficial for increasing the production of mitochondrial proteins necessary for the cell to use oxygen. Interestingly, they found HIIT exercise increased the machinery necessary for RNA to be translated to protein.
This study would suggest that HIIT exercise is superior for reducing mitochondrial dysfunction associated with aging compared to resistance training. Obviously resistance training is superior for strength gains which is something else that deteriorates with age.
Understand that studies such as this are trying to understand the cellular mechanisms behind exercise, and not necessarily to make direct clinical recommendations.

I’m surprised how good it feels to be back in #Melbourne. It’s like I’m picking up where I left off in May. All the places feel familiar, it’s easy to navigate and you just know where everything is. Started working today at Baker and it felt like I never left!
.
Went for a short run today around Albert Lake to dust off final remains of a minor jet lag. Pretty nice views there! And BTW, that’s the lake they circle when Formula 1 is in town.

Fall in love with the process, and the progress will start to come naturally 💪🏼🖤

Finally 220kg (484 pound) triple, boddyweight 101kg (222 pounds)... last time I tried this was 6 months ago and I pulled my hamstring ... finally demon conquered💪 #weightlifting #weightlifter #chemist #scientistswholift #scientist #jdi #jdibarbell #squat #backsquat #fitness #polishpower #bmz #bmzteam #nyc #lic #legdayeveryday #legs #gym #bodybuilding #workout

Heavy rain cancelled our plans today. But fortunately, there's a @nysc right behind our hotel, so we went there for a nice work-out.
I really hope that their bars weigh 45 lbs, because that would mean that I set four PRs. 💪😁
First, high bar squat for 5s up to 5x185 lbs rep PR w/ belt and then 2x205 lbs w/ belt, probably my best ever high bar, and definitely my best ever double. (5x135 lbs shown)
Then bench, where I did 4 sets of 5 at 135 lbs and a double at 155 lbs. No film, because Morten had to unrack and rack the bar for me due to the way the bench was.
Finally, a great sumo session where I did beltless 5s up to 275 lbs (shown) and then a double at 325 lbs (shown, rep PR), and then a back-off set of 12x275 lbs (rep PR 😁). Really happy with this, because the bar was a bit thick. But I took that as a good thing, because it forced me to really focus on setting my hook properly.
Thanks to #nysc for having us! A great way to spend a very rainy day. 🙂

Don’t forget to step away from the bench and make time for the gym!
⠀⠀
I’m a dancer but have started going to the gym to just get fitter and stronger. Ive always hated working out but dancing isn’t always a consistent workout esp since I was dancing on a team with the goal of performing/competing, not necessarily exercising.
⠀⠀
Hitting the gym has been great, not just for my health but for my research too! My mind has been much more focused in lab. Plus I feel much better about sitting for hours in lab since I can make up for it in the gym!
⠀⠀
I’m still working on my form and getting my strength up but can’t wait to see my progress. Besides this will also help for when I have to use the French press in lab😂😂😫 (the pieces are so heavy)
⠀⠀
Any other scientists hit the gym and have tips for a gym newbie😅?

Still working on that bottom position of my pull up. Strength takes time, and my long levers don’t make it any easier 😜, but I’ll get there eventually. 💪
