A crop from “Limuw | Santa Cruz Island,” now on view at @lightgreyartlab in Minneapolis! My solo show is up in its entirety for just one more week! Huge thanks to everyone who has taken the time to visit these pieces. I’ve been all heartachey missing this drawing in particular. 💚 This piece weaves together many different narratives about Santa Cruz Island, including the near extinction of the Santa Cruz Island Fox. Here a fox is pictured facing down its predator: a Golden Eagle. The Golden Eagle is perched on top of feral piglets, the primary prey species that made SCI such an attractive feeding ground for this mainland raptor. Just visible above the fox’s ear, hidden under the branches of an endemic Santa Cruz Island Manzanita is the endemic Santa Cruz Island Gopher Snake. This snake is a “dwarf endemic” because it is significantly smaller than gopher snakes found on the mainland. 💚 To learn more about this piece, visit my website and take a hi-res digital tour of the 60+ species in the drawing.

This is one of four fold-out bookplates from an 1853 publication called ‘A tabular view of characteristic British fossils stratigraphically arranged’. These huge plates are covered with incredibly drawn b&w illustrations of distinctive British fossils. This is plate 1 and covers the Tertiary period of Eocene to Pleistocene and includes illustrations of Mammoths, Irish Elk, turtles and shark teeth. #book #oldbook #bookplate #illustration #scientificillustration #antique #antiquebooks #historyofpalaeontology #history #palaeontology #palaeoart #paleontology #paleoart #paleontologist #evolution #extinct #extinction #prehistoric #fossil #fossils #fossilart #fossiladdict #bestofbritish #greatbritain #british #britishfossils #art #instart #naturalhistory #science

It’s been a long time coming, but we now stock vintage print reproductions. We have a vast array of beautiful 19th century animal and botanical archival images. They’ve been digitally enriched with the contrasts and details gleaming as they once did back in the hey day of adventuring.
These are only available in our bricks and mortar right now, but we promise to get them online as soon as we can! Have a lovely Sunday! 🐸

As a general rule I find I prefer the Luminance bright blender for feathers, while I stick to the Derwent blender for fur. The Luminance blender seems to give a sleeker texture somehow, which works well for conveying healthy, shiny feathers.

The bee eaters in the reference photos I'm using for the pose and body shape of my subjects are all a different species (European bee eaters, I believe). Rainbow bee eaters are not only differently coloured, but the shape and location of their markings are different too. So I have to make sure I get them right or I'll end up creating a whole new species of bird 😝

Swallow in gouache. The bird itself was masked off with masking fluid while the background was hand-painted and mixed on the paper using badger fur brushes. We were taught in school that #Science and #Art don’t match! They’re two different fields that can’t be amalgamated. But the more I science, the more I realize how both domains are interdisciplinary, and how science and research are so much better when looked at through multiple angles and perspectives, the same way we look at paintings.
When doing research, you'll definitely fall into gloomy phases strong enough to make you suspect the results you're having and even sometimes doubt yourself and the outcome!
When painting, if the drawing doesn't make sense anymore, you should stop a bit, take a couple of steps back, look at the canvas from a distance and check for missing details. Those tiny elements you must add to bring your canvas to life!

Likely in science, when the answers given are no longer lucid and satisfying, it is time to take a break, collect all the micro-results you've been having, assemble them into figures, analyze the data and process it into insightful information. Only then, you will be able to see the flaws, come up with new experiments to finalize the details and finally complement the story and the vision behind your work.

Why are bird wings so difficult to draw?? And why did I decide to do one for my final??? (Note: this particular bird wing is not my final, however it is one of the ones that I prepped last Spring for our museum!) #somanyquestions #scientificillustration #bluejay #museumspecimen #flmnh
