i say good day to you, dr wooten. #sciencebitchesplease

I don't usually like to be a center of attention, but I believe in pushing the boundaries of my comfort zone, so I am participating in the #wearestemsquad #summerofstem August challenge.. Some facts about me: -PhD in genetics from @uoft -Biology instructor at San Diego City College.
- Scicomm via social media instructor at Scripps Institution of oceanography.
- Marketing via social media instructor at UCSD Extension.
- indie Author
- Social media consultant at Captive touch.
- Happily married with two awesome kids.
- hobbies: spending time with my family and friends, reading, Netflix, movies
- I believe if you can do science, you can do anything.

Don't say you support something if you are not willing to do what it takes to preserve it. .

First impressions are important, especially in #scicomm because if you dismiss people when you meet them, you build walls instead of bridges. I see a lot of these posts on Facebook especially by T shirt shops who hope to get to the emotional side of scientists who are frustrated with so much pseudoscience going on. If you see them, please don't buy into their negativity, they are doing a disservice to #scicomm . I used to get into arguments with anti science folks on Facebook, now I am finding myself speaking against bad and misguided #scicomm more and more. Someone's gotta do it! .

New post in the #Sciencebitchesplease series. I don't just Make these up, but point out what I see on social media. When creating content for social media, focus on first capturing the attention of a follower who is scrolling through their feed. Your post should make their finger stop. Here I am highlighting excellent work by @thechemisttree and @studentsforscience and @mashupmath give them an applause please. The overwhelming graph is not from a real user, but represents what I have seen some scientists post (don't want to hurt any feelings). .

Don't get me wrong, I love Neil, but that does not stop me from using my#scicomm red pen on his public statements. This may be interpreted as scientifically illiterate = full of 💩 .
Your thoughts?.

Rant: I feel this way about a lot of #scicomm I witness, online and off line. There is too much reinventing the wheel, ignoring what is already known and applying, refusing to see the "deficit model" for what it is. Lots of videos and chats and blog posts about science w/o strategy, not taking into account and applying what we already know about human nature and how we make sense of information, becoming a #scicomm "celebrity" without stopping to reflect on effectiveness, large egos going around, echo chambers forming, "while war rages around". .
What do you think?

Haven't done one of these in awhile. Decided to save them for rare occasions when I just can't stay quite. This case is one of them..
If you come on Twitter and try to spread knowledge about science in the name of scicomm, your first and most important step is to build trust. Announcing that you're on Twitter to conduct a "social experiment" is not how you build trust. 🤦🏻‍♀️
Bitch pleeeease!

Here is the next item in the #sciencebitchesplease series. This example is based on a true story of science bitches trying to do science communication by enticing curiosity (although a different organism was used). The thing is, unless your audience knows why your message matters, they won't be curious, especially when you use convoluted words. Folks are bombarded with links to click, think about why they should take the time to look for the link and click on it. Plus, make it easy for them to find the link..
I can write an essay about driving clicks, but I'll stop here for now. Please share this post so we can all #scicomm better online.

When it comes to hashtags, size matters. Although it is tempting to grow as large an audience as possible, in the end you'll be more effective if you choose a particular audience and align what you post with what they care about. That's my answer and I am sticking to it. Turn on the sound, music is pretty funky..

You won't gain support for Science by calling people morons. One of the biggest mistakes I see scientists do is assume someone lacks intellectual capacity if they don't understand basic science. There are many societal and psychological factors that influence how people accept and process information. Besides, not everyone know everything, even a scientist. How would you like your mechanic calling you a "moron" if you don't know how your car works or why it breaks down?.
