Happy Friday! I decided to share another adorable pic of soil bacteria for all the goober lovers out there 😄 I now know that the hairy one on the bottom left is some type of bacillus. Again, I’m not a bacteria person so I don’t know what most of these are or any other details relating to them. All I know is that they’re part of this soil community and are actually kind of cute (fungi are still cuter 😉) 💕 Have a great weekend!

Reposting in light of recent events, it’s good to see Nocardia and Streptomyces right next to Acid Fast Bacilli (Mycobacterium) which was my last post.

When I’m not playing with fungus, I get to play with some other pretty cool organisms...Acid-fast bacilli like Mycobacterium (TB) species and those that are partially acid-fast; aerobic actinomycetes like Nocardia and Streptomyces.
.
Acid fast bacilli are unique in that their cell walls have an extremely high lipid content that causes them to resist decolorization in the staining process in the presence of acid; a characteristic known as “acid fastness”. Hence the name acid fast bacilli. A kinyoun stain for Mycobacterium uses Carbol Fuchsin as the primary stain, 3% acid alcohol as the decolorizer, and methylene blue counterstain. Organsims that are “partially” acid fast require the use of a weaker acid, so 1% sulfuric acid is used in place of 3% acid alcohol when performing a modified kinyoun stain.
.
Nocardia and streptomyces both stain as branching gram positive rods on a gram stain and can look very similar. However, since streptomyces is not generally considered pathogenic while Nocardia is *highly* pathogenic, it’s very important to use a modified kinyoun stain to confirm which organism you’re working with!
.
On the left side of this image is streptomyces. It is purple because it’s cell walls were decolorized by the 1% sulfuric acid, washing away the pink carbol fuchsin and letting that methylene blue shine at the end. I use this species as the negative control for my modified kinyoun stain as it is NOT partially acid fast and considered modified kinyoun negative.
.
On the right side of this image is Nocardia. The cell walls of nocardia RESIST the decolorizing process and its cell walls retain their nice bright pink carbol fuchsin dye job. This organism is partially acid fast and is used as the positive control for this stain; Nocardia is modified kinyoun positive.

Another circle of mini moths. Really looking forward to releasing these at Selvedge Fair, London in 2 weeks. Hope to see some of you there!

You know it's winter when you hear the calls of the green warbler.

These little guys which are just about the size of your palm, make a long journey from the lands around Turkey and the Caspian Sea to South India and Sri Lanka, where the spend the winter.

They're notoriously difficult to tell apart from other leaf warblers, but their enthusiastic, trisyllabic 'chi-su-wee!' is a dead giveaway.

Today’s #drawdinovember ceratopsian is Albertaceratops nesmoi, a centrosaur from the Oldman formation in Alberta, Canada. .

Process for painting a snake:

Me *sees cute snake*: I want to paint a snake

300 scales later: Why did I want to paint the snake?

Finished snake painting: I'm never painting a snake again.

Me *sees another cute snake*: I want to paint a snake.

Stage 2 is the worst right now.

Planning out (possibly quite tedious) carving practice. Moth and leaves will be burned and painted, scales, based off of microscopic view of moth, will be carved. I don't know if I've mentioned before, but I get allergy-induced migraines. The last few months have been pretty bad, with 1-3 a week, which is why I haven't been very good at posting updates. Don't ask me why I settled on turning wood into sawdust and smoke as an art medium..

#SciArtFriday ~ Lecturers at Forth Valley College, Stirling, Scotland, collaborated with Natasha Russell (@natashanumbernine), the #ArtistAtSea on the #SeaLevelSecrets cruise off the coast of Hawaii. While Natasha was on board R/V Falkor we connected with the school via satellite video link to talk with graphic design students. After discussing the nature of the science into sea level rise being carried out on the expedition, the students were put into teams and challenged to make work which communicated the research focus and findings. Check out the results! Great work and examples of science communication and using science to inspire art! #SciComm #SciArt
