WHY I COACH?
I started playing at about 8yrs and loved it. Then my first job came as an assistant tennis coach at 13yrs of age in Esperance, helping little groms to hit a ball. Both my brother and I have enjoyed the game for years, having travelled throughout WA competing as youngsters. "We did it for the love of the game," as my Grandad used to say.
You see, my Mum's Dad was a bit of a legend from the Goldfields back in the 50s. He won many top events as a pro player of his era and played with other former Australian greats like John Casson, Rob Kilderry and Alan Hicks. The only objectives to potential greatness were time and money to travel further abroad. It was a tough time following WWII. Yet, among his many achievements was taking a set off the World Number #1 and Wimbledon, French and Australian Open Champion, fellow Australian Lew Hoad, during his prime.
When we travelled to Perth as kids in the 80s/90s Grandad used to take us to tennis events like Hopman Cup and Davis Cup and, up to Royal Kings Park TC for a hit on the immaculate grass centre court. Suffice to say, Grandad still ran us raggered well into his 60s and he kept playing doubles into his 80s. He had court craft!
I love to coach (Esperance, Margaret River, currently Broome) because I am passionate about country sporting opportunities and would love to see tennis grow across Australia, no matter where you live. I think my Grandad would like that too. He passed away in 2013, a year after I started coaching tennis here in Broome.
