Kicking off fall with a Halloween-themed anthology! Haunted Nights, edited by Ellen Datlow & Lisa Morton (@blumhouse Oct. '17) features stories from the likes of (my fave) Brian Evenson, Stephen Graham Jones, and Garth Nix. As usual with Datlow, the anthology is well-curated with a diversity of stories, though the lore behind the jack-o-lantern comes up a few times. I especially liked it when authors took Halloween folklore and used it to comment on other issues - "All Through the Night" by Elise Forier Edie, which addresses immigration in the Industrial Revolution in NYC, was a stand-out. I also especially loved "A Kingdom of Sugar Skulls and Marigolds" by Eric J. Guignard, which was inspired by Day of the Dead folklore. ... 🍁 Note: This is the advance review cover, the real cover doesn't look at all like this, so keep that in mind when you're browsing your local indie bookstore!
