The capsized hulk of SMS Derfflinger, circa 1939-46. The battlecruiser Derfflinger had been in every major action of WW1 and had helped destroy HMS Queen Mary and HMS Invincible during the Battle of Jutland. However, like most all major interred Imperial German Navy ships, she was scuttled in June of 1919. It took 20 years for her to see the surface again, mainly due to the fact that she had capsized and was deeper than most of her compatriots at the bottom of Scapa Flow. She was placed on this floating drydock and anchored until 1946 (the war had interrupted salvage operations). Scrapping finally completed in 1948.
Note the salvage worker huts and workshops on the top of Derfflinger's upside down hull. #kaiserlichemarine #derfflinger #germannavy #scapaflow #scotland #battlecruiser #war_ships #warshipporn #warships @nilsson4190
