"Estimates suggests that less than 1% of the grassland remains in a relatively pristine condition." (Smeins, Diamond, & Hanselka, 1991) The coastal prairie will always be home for me. Yet, this one sentence keeps me searching for answers on how to best conserve and manage it. One day I hope to be able to give back to this landscape that gave so much to me. #coastalprairie #saveprairies #texaswildlife #texasnature #gulfcoastcattleman

ACTION ALERT! Call and write Cherry Creek State Park's wildlife manager, Jason Trujillo, and tell them to STOP KILLING WILDLIFE!

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) routinely kills wildlife in our state parks from coyotes, to fox, to beavers to prairie dogs.
Yesterday, individuals that were under contract by CPW with APHIS (US Department of Agriculture/Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services/ Wildlife DISservices) were killing prairie dogs at Cherry Creek State Park using toxic gas, most likely phosphine, which causes a terribly painful slow death for the prairie dogs as they bleed from the inside out for days. They were doing this next to a model airplane runway and along the roadways of our state park.
The reason we were given for this action was that they were complying with "health and safety issues" as per their wildlife management plan. When asked what health and safety issue the prairie dogs presented, Jason could not directly answer that question.
The stated mission of USDA APHIS Wildlife Services (WS) is to "provide Federal leadership and expertise to resolve wildlife conflicts to allow people and wildlife to coexist. " Why then are they just killing prairie dogs instead of finding ways to "coexist"?? If you are concerned, give Jason a call and ask him why in our state parks, that we all hold in common, is wildlife being killed when they are the only places left where the public thinks wildlife is safe. Ask Jason to ensure that the killing of prairie dogs on Cherry Creek State Park is immediately discontinued. Of course, you are encouraged to ask any questions that you might have.

We must all start working together to ensure that our wildlife agencies stop killing wildlife and actually take steps to begin to preserve wildlife. We are tired of seeing government agents destroying the last remnants of living communities we have left.

Suzanne and Becky are attending the 2017 Prairie Restoration Roundup at the Indiangrass Preserve today. Hosted by our friends @katyprairie.

This week's #featuredcreature is the Attwater's pocket gopher! Gophers are important ecosystem engineers-their burrowing cycles nutrients, aerates the soil, and provides shelter for other animals.
