loving family, wonderful home, excess food, latest technology, too many clothes, different pairs of shoes for my feet, supportive friends, a wholesome education. caught up in all superficial aspects of life, I often forget how fortunate I am for everything I have.
similar to @neelamvohra, on my way to and from work, I see so many families, so many kids, with so little. they might not be getting the food they need, the care they require, or the education they deserve. they probably have to work 2x, 3x, 4x harder for everything I take for granted.
after working on a project with The Education Partnership, an organization that helps provide supplies to schools all over the Pittsburgh area, it became so much more apparent to me how much reform the education system needs.
even growing up, attending a large competitive highschool, i saw the system fail so many. one size does NOT fit all. different kids learn in different ways. there are not enough resources. and frankly, kids are not encouraged to learn, but rather conditioned to try to get good grades. there are not nearly enough good teachers, and the ones that are are forced to satisfy the administration.
the youth is our future. they're so easily impressionable and we should do what we can to set them up for success. knowledge is power and freedom. education can change the world. we need a better system, more teacher education innovation, enough school supplies, and better resources. we need reform.
