Their population numbers peak during Autumn. Being flightless means they have to walk wherever they need to go and a lot of them crosses big roads where they tend to get crushed by traffic. This becomes a great and easy meal for other individuals! The downside is, as they are feeding on their fallen mates, they are left vulnerable for the next vehicle to pass!
