It is #WorldCrocodileDay! Found predominantly throughout the world’s tropics, crocodiles come from a time of dinosaurs, first appearing 83.5 million years ago. Once highly diverse, extant crocodilians are largely semi-aquatic apex predators, with the largest of them all being the Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) pictured here. In addition to being the largest extant crocodile, the saltie is also the largest living reptile. But this had nothing on the extinct Sarcosuchus , which grew to almost 12 metres in length and tipped the scales at 8 tonnes!
