A small tribute to Saint Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindrawale, the shaheed of 1984 sikh genocide.
❌ The operation blue star as they call it but in reality it was not an operation, it was a massacre and a genocide. Saint Jarnail Singh Ji Bhindrawale and his Singh's fought till their last breath in defence of their faith and honour. We bow down our heads to all the martyrs of the 1984 genocide and remember them through their great sacrifice.

Can't think of a better bumper sticker to drive by this week! ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀35 years ago legends walked this Earth. Mahan Yodai, GurSikhs like the ones from our legendary Sakhis, defended the heart of the Sikh Panth, our seat of Divinity and Socio-political authority. Bhai Amrik Singh, Bibi Upkar Kaur, Baba Thara Singh, General Shabeg Singh and less than 300 others fought one of the world's largest armies for over a week and a half. If it hadn't happened in living memory we would say it was impossible. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀And leading these brave Kaurs and Singhs, in the spirit of Baba Dip Singh, Mata Bhag Kaur and Akali Phula Singh was Baba Jarnail Singh. Only thirty six years old, with two young children, the example of Baba Jarnail Singh towers over 20th century Sikh history. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The world can call him a terrorist, an extremist and a fundamentalist. But we know who he was and what he fought for. He will always be our beloved Sant ji, with a smile on his lips and a quick laugh, always looking out for those most marginalized and oppressed. There was nothing that he did not give to this Panth and we will celebrate him as long as our Nation stands.

This picture of a protest against the brutal assault and murder of young Asifa perfectly captures the huge gap in how the media views Baba Jarnail Singh and how Sikhs today understand him. Recently the Canadian media recklessly regurgitated the Indian government and Indian media line about Baba Jarnail Singh. He was again portrayed as an extremist, fundamentalist, violent, genocidal terrorist who was somehow a creation of the central government who became uncontrollable.
But Sikhs the world over not only consider Shahid Baba Jarnail Singh one of the greatest heroes and martyrs of Sikh history but also realize how important his message still is, how relevant his speeches still are and how desperately South Asia needs a leader like him.

Baba Jarnail Singh is not a symbol of harsh oppression, religious orthodoxy or violent extremism. For us, he is a champion of the people against corrupt and abusive governments, he personified respect for pluralism while also being dedicated to the sovereignty and uniqueness of the Sikh Panth. He was someone who exemplified Panthik unity and the need to work together as a Sikh Nation. He understood that when the government not only doesn't protect you but is actively harming your community, then defensive force is a necessity.
Baba Jarnail Singh was a strong believer in caste equality and women's rights. I know that sounds absurd to us today both because of his media image and the reputation of the Taksal. He was uncompromising when it came to sexual harassment, abuse or assault. He also spoke against domestic violence and more than once ensured that a young woman who was being assaulted by her husband and in-laws was protected.

He also spoke against domestic violence and more than once ensured that a young woman who was being assaulted by her husband and in-laws was protected.⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Was he perfect? No. No Sikh can be after all. He was not a feminist and not as progressive as some of us may like. He was in charge of an exclusively male organization. And while he firmly believed that women should not be barred from any Seva or position in the community, he maintained that women could not be in the Panj Piare. So I'm not ignoring these facts and trying to pretend he was something he wasn't. What is clear if that he was very firmly committed to the rights of women to be free of physical and sexual violence. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀In fact, before he became a political figure and the leader of the Movement it was women who were his earliest supporters. They had suffered the most from the fallout of the green revolution. Increases in alcohol abuse and domestic violence were serious problems. Baba Jarnail Singh's simple and effective message appealed to them. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Continued in the comments.

To Celebrate Vaisakhi - Five (out of countless) Essential Aspects of Being a Sikh -
Part 5: Leader Among Equals
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀This is a collage of Panthik Leaders. In my opinion these GurSikhs were leaders of the entire Panth in a social, political and/or military sense. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Why does a Nation of equals need a commander? In order to achieve the lofty goals that Guru Gobind Singh Sahib set for us we need structure and organization. In a battlefield and in politics a single voice is required to speak for the Panth. However, true Panthik leaders understand that they are servants of the Sangat, and that the true leader of the Sikh Nation is Guru Granth Sahib Maharaj. These leaders are able to bring together diverse voices in the Panth, build consensus and create a united front in times of existential crises for the Sikh Nation. These GurSikhs are servant leaders and are willing to sacrifice everything for the Sikh Nation. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Clockwise from the bottom left:
- Maharani Jind Kaur: Political leader during the 1st Anglo-Sikh Wars
- Shahid Baba Banda Singh Bahadur: Military leader and co-political leader (with the Panj) of the Khalsa after Guru Gobind Singh Sahib's Joti Jot
- Navab Kapur Singh: Military leader (& co-political leader) of the Dal Khalsa in the mid-18th Century
- Sardar Jassa Singh Ahluvalia: Military & political leader of the Dal Khalsa in the mid to late 18th century
- Shahid Sardar Sham Singh Attari: Military leader of the Khalsa Army during the 1st Anglo-Sikh Wars
- Shahid Baba Jarnail Singh: Political, social and military leader of the Panth in the early 1980's
- Baba Kharak Singh: Political leader of the Panth (1st President of the SGPC and one of the earliest Presidents of the Shiromani Akali Dal) in the 1920's
- Shahid Baba Maharaj Singh: Political/Military leader during the 2nd Anglo-Sikh Wars
- (centre image) Mata Jit Kaur (aka Jito, Sundari) & Mata Sahib Kaur: After Baba Banda Singh's Shahidi, Guru Gobind Singh Sahib's wife, Mata Jit Kaur, and the Mother of the Khalsa, Mata Sahib Kaur, lead the Panth through a very difficult period. ⠀⠀

Never forget the great sacrifice made by the faithful, know your roots study your history. My heart and soul is with the Shaheeds of 1984 who fought and died defending the holy complex of Harmandir sahib and other Gurdware. #sant #santji #bhindranwale #santbabajarnailsinghjikhalsa #santbabajarnailsinghji #khalsa #sikh #singh #1984 #14th #jathedar #damdamitaksal #jindabad #khalistan #santjarnailsinghjikhalsabhindranwale #soorme #deathbeforedishonour #realtalk #regrann #khalistanzindabad #ak47 #blue #star #contedrawing #jarnailsingh #shaheed #kaumi #soorma #punjab #india
