Last time I was in Houston, my friend Melissa Noble took me on a secret trip with Brian Feehan to Lighting Sam Hopkins old place in Third Ward. Brian used to play bass with Lightin' when you was but a lad. Brian told me great stories about Lightin'. One of my favorites is when ZZ Top was backing Lighting and they weren't getting the bass lines like Lighting liked it. It seems they wanted the songs to stay in tempo and change chords at the "correct" time. I know my musician friends feel this. Anyway, Lighting stops the show and calls out, "Brian! Brian, come up here..."
Brian filled in. I remember reading a story of lightin' and ZZ Top years ago. It was the same basic idea of Lighting not changing chords according to the correct pattern but the story I read said that Lighting turned to them and said, "Lightin' change when Lightin' wanna change!" •
