This is truly the man, the myth, and the legend, all in one. This is my great uncle Cleave Sauls. Known by most as “unc” or “Capt”. This man paved the way for many young captains and fisherman in the Gulf of Mexico. He was one of the first to long line swordfish in the gulf. He was one of the first to commercially harvest red snapper as well. Unc was born in 1928. Not exactly the easiest of times. He was tougher than nails though! Unc was a fisherman his entire life and eventually trained his sons, nephews, and great nephew. Without this man the salty Swagger family wouldn’t have a grain of salt among us! He is pictured sometime in the 50’s along what is now Tarpon Dock Seafood. Back then it was “Spence brothers”. Unc may have been a hard ass, but I will never forget the lessons he taught me. For example, “I don’t care if you’re tired of pullin on em! That gear has three hooks for a reason! Catch three at a time son!” This one is for you Unc. We love and miss you more than you’ll ever know. We can’t wait to fish with you again! Who was your Salty mentor?
