Yesterday we had a good turn out for our community meeting regarding the lack of patrolling of our community’s natural preserve region. In a nutshell the concern is about non-O’Otham trespassing that has resulted in discharging of firearms, illegal waste dumping, alcohol and drug use, and ecologically destructive behavior on spiritually revered locations used for ceremony, traditional social gatherings, plant/animal habitation, and community recreation.
We started our meeting off w a giving of thanks for the day. Our wellness staff made of hasañi usk (cactus rib), ba’ag a’an (eagle feather) were present to ensure that spirit is acknowledged in every decision we make. We started with the oldest speakers, then gave a brief summary of the initiative, presented the matters of concern and presented solutions. Families gave their support for this issue and stated they’ll be present when this initiative is presented to council. The initiative is something that can be passed by the people. It’ll demonstrate to our own community at how much power the people have.
