Happy to see the Christmas lights? Or "Bah Humbug! It's too early!" Let me know below...Good Tuesday evening from lovely London and this great shot of the famous Oxford Street by @geminatrix, all decked out ready for the season. Love that rainy city scene! For me, Christmas is a good excuse to quaff copious amounts of Oban and dance around to the Nat King Cole Christmas Album in my Christmas pudding onesie. It's a glorious sight to behold.
Now Britain is great for absorbing cultures and foods from across the world. After all, Chinese food is the #1 most popular Takeaway...followed at #2 by Indian food. Fish and Chips appear in 4th place. Thanksgiving, a hugely popular American holiday which is in 9 days time, is also making a mark in the UK. It's estimated one in six Britons now celebrate the festival! Sales of turkeys in November are up 95% on seven years ago at Waitrose, and 135% year-on-year from Ocado. Pumpkin pie, cornbread, maple-flavoured meats and salted caramels are also selling fast in British shops. Sadly we don't have the super amazing Thanksgiving deals our American chums get, but I have seen discounted Eccles cakes at the local Gregg's so mustn't grumble.
Some very interesting history here... Oxford Street itself follows the route of a Roman road, the Via Trinobantina, which linked Calleva Atrebatum (near Silchester, Hampshire) with Camulodunum (now Colchester) via London and became one of the major routes in and out of the city. Today it's the busiest shopping street in Europe with over half a million visitors a day. Gulp! Lovely shot by @geminatrix 🇬🇧 Want your Photos of Britain to be featured?
