Remember the ship bell we posted 20 days ago? This is the yard model of the ship she belonged to: the colossal crude oil tanker Esso Deutschland. She was built at the ship yard of Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Sakaide, Japan, in 1976. With an overall length of 378 and a beam of 69 meters, she was between 1976 and 1985 the largest merchant ship to sail under the German flag. Her tanks could carry a total of 500.000 m³ of crude oil. In 1985 she was then sold to the Grand corporation and renamed Grand. The Hellespont Group bought her in 1990 and had her renamed Hellespont Grand. She was on duty under that name until she was scrapped in Alang, India, in 2003.
The yard model of the Esso Deutschland is on display beside her original ship bell in our section dedicated to the history of tanker ships, on deck 6 of the museum.
