Oh hi Barb(era) D’Alba! Sei bellissima! Raineri’s Sagrin means sorrow in the local dialect (similar to chagrin in French) because the grape is a bit of a heartbreaker (like pinot), tough to do well at the best of times, that said...the 2015 is exceptional, dense and rich with its clear influence from time in French oak, organic viticulture, lots of ripe black fruit, easily ageable another 2-8yrs, pretty and tasty now with Chinese eggplant and not bad with Hungarian sausage. Gianmatteo Raineri was the winemaker at Domenico Clerico before embarking on this startup in 2006. The elf is also a link to local lore, the elves come out in the night to eat the grapes, perhaps a fairytale link to the angel’s share of Scotchyland?
