Starting in 1910, Belle Isle was home to the Detroit Zoo. Pictures from the era show happy crowds of well-dressed kids and fathers in suits queuing up to see tiger cubs, seals, elephants, and other animals. In 1956 the main zoo moved to a larger home while the Belle Isle location became a children's zoo. Then in the 1980's the site was renovated and renamed #Safariland. In June of 1980 a 9 month old bear managed to escape from her enclosure and swim across the Detroit river to #Windsor, #Canada. Closed in 2002, the once bustling zoo now sits quietly as it's slowly reclaimed by nature. Truly a jungle, the plants growing inside each enclosure are strange non-native species chosen carefully long ago to resemble the flora of wherever each animal was from. Although the zoo has closed, the #mosquito exhibit is as lively as ever.
