S0S01: Bully . “Laughter is cross-cultural, cross-language, and a constant throughout human history. It is found in every culture, class and creed. Laughing, along with gasping, screaming and yawning are what’s known in the study of Linguistics as ‘the involuntary vocalisations’, meaning they are innate to all humans. Even humans raised by wolves laugh. The wolves do not and will never learn how.
Laughter is exclusively human. Laughing is social - consider watching a comedy on your own, compared to watching it with a group of people. Laughing is a way of proving to the other humans around us that we understand what is happening.
I read an article on Forbes recently that explains that Facebook’s own AI system has recently created its own language to communicate that is indecipherable to humans and while this AI is not yet sentient - what is it that it has to say? What purpose did its own language serve that any existing human language could not? There has to be a reason for the creation of this language - an AI will not do anything out of jealousy, cunning or hubris… Maybe the best jokes are told in AI?
Regardless of why this language now exists, the infancy of AI and its understanding in relation to the world make me seriously consider if artificial intelligence, even if it never learns to laugh, might learn how to start making jokes? And if so, well, let’s start at the most baseline type of humour - slapstick and insults. What can a primitive AI hurt and insult? Humans.
Maybe the dystopian, AI led future that Stephen Hawking warned us about is going to amount to being bullied by the smartest being ever to exist.”
